11/26/2023 0 Comments Boxer 6 engineFlat-six engines have also occasionally been used in motorcycles, and commonly in general aviation aircraft, along with the flat-four engine. Several other car manufacturers, including Subaru, have produced flat-six engines at times. The most notable use of flat-six engines is the Porsche 911 sports car, which has used flat-six engines continuously since 1963. The first production flat-six engine was in the 1904 Wilson-Pilcher 18/24 HP car. The disadvantages are a large width (which can limit the maximum steering angle when used in a front-engined car), a large intake manifold being required when a central carburetor is used, and duplication of the inlet and outlet connections for water-cooled engines. The advantages of the flat-six layout are good engine balance (for reduced vibration), a low center of gravity, short length (compared with an inline-six engine) and being well suited to air-cooling. One Line Summaryīoxer 6 comes from its layout of pistons and requires advanced technology to construct, filtering out auto makes that have the resources and customers who can afford the extra cost.Horizontally opposed 6-cylinder piston engine Continental O-470-13A air-cooled aircraft engine Īs a side note, for 718s, currently Porsche mounts Flat Fours. It's expensive! Porsche is the very few which has the technology to build flat sixes and charge extra to its customers. As you figured, the superior technology comes with a price. If it's a superior configuration, why won't other manufacturers go for boxer engine? Because it's difficult to make one! And the wide layout makes it difficult to fit in beneath a hood. The Carrera’s peaks increase from 350 horsepower and 287 lb-ft to 370 and 332. So if you have the technology and market demand from your customers, in my opinion 100 out of 100 times, you opt for boxer engine. In exchange for this poundage, the engines deliver usefully higher output. The link will be given towards the end of the article). And faster rev means more horsepower (you might want to check out our detail posts regarding it. Thus, causes less vibration inside the engine, which in turn, put in lighter crank, meaning you get faster revolution. To add, since movement of pistons are balanced out as opposing moving direction cancels each other, its stroke is smoother. ![]() And because of its short length layout, more effective cooling is possible. Why? Think about this, if you are short, you can make abrupt movement easier because there won't be as much weight transfer relative to taller guys. Moving on to next, why Porsche chose a boxer engine over other configuration? As mentioned above, the low center of gravity enhances handling precision. 6 pistons are facing each other horizontally, so, engine looks flat and wide from the outside. Now, some of you might wonder why do you call it flat 6, then? Easy peasy. In the picture, if you follow the arrow which denotes the movement, you see pair of pistons move in and out together with respect to shaft. So for Boxer 6, you have 6 horizontally opposed pistons, with a shaft in the middle. Obviously, boxer engine has lower center of gravity as opposed to V configurations. On the other hand, Boxer 6 engine (flat sixes) looks more like this if you look at it from the top: The name, 'V', is obvious (do you see the V?), and 8 comes from the number of pistons. It's how car makes like Toyota build their engine. Now, to clarify, above is the V8 engine, not the boxer. ![]() And the in and out movement creates the torque. Pistons are contained in cylinder blocks and each piston head is pushed down as combustion of air and fuel occur in the block. You see the hole above? That's where shaft goes in and connect. ![]() engine specification was striking, and an example of clever model. And the torque comes from the strokes of pistons which looks like this.
